Newbury Street originated in the 19th century as part of a major land reclamation project from the Charles River, creating what we now know as Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, the street became one of Boston’s most prestigious residential and commercial areas. Distinguished buildings, such as the Transit Building (built in 1919, now known as 360 Newbury Street) and the Boston Architectural College's brutalist structure (1966, located at 320 Newbury Street), mark the architectural evolution of this storied avenue.

Today, Newbury Street continues to be Boston’s premier shopping destination, boasting over 300 stores, galleries, and salons, alongside approximately 52 cafés and restaurants. The eastern side near Boston Public Garden hosts luxury boutiques, while heading west, you’ll find more diverse, creative, and affordable establishments. The street is also famous for its regular events like “Open Newbury Street,” where traffic is blocked off on selected Sundays in summer and winter, creating a vibrant pedestrian-friendly environment filled with shopping, dining, and cultural activities. This blend of historical charm, upscale commerce, and bustling urban life makes Newbury Street one of Boston’s most beloved landmarks.
